Sentience as the ground floor of consciousness, possibly universal
Pollan distinguishes sentience from consciousness: sentience is a more basic ground floor — awareness of your environment and recognition of changes, good or bad. Sentience may be universal and a property of life itself; you can make a case that plants and single-celled creatures have sentience. Consciousness is how we do sentience — every creature has its own version based on body type, sensorium, and scale of time and space.
