MicroConf's decade of events and the value of finding your people

The host, Rob Walling, says he has been running MicroConf for more than a decade, and the thing he hears from attendees more than anything else is 'I wish I'd come sooner' — not because of any single talk or tactic, but because they finally found their people. At MicroConf Portland, organizers arranged waterfall hikes, food tours, and happy hours so founders could spend real time together, and relationships formed there turn into the people you text when something breaks or when something finally works.

Experiment with outcome-based pricing; Anthropic and OpenAI show it is coming

The creator recommends that if you have the ability to introduce outcome-based pricing, you may as well start experimenting with it, because there is clear evidence it is going to be used — pointing to how Anthropic and OpenAI are billing for AI functionality. He notes Anthropic also charges a subscription fee, so outcome-based pricing and subscriptions can work together; you just have to figure out the right points to use each.

Regulated environments are a strong niche for SaaS, and generated apps will struggle there

The creator recommends that SaaS founders keep their minds open to regulated-environment niches like HIPAA compliance or industry-specific safety knowledge, calling it a really good space. His reasoning: generated apps are built in a chaotic and random way, and regulation and randomness do not go well together, so AI-generated apps will be really hard to live in regulated environments.

Focus on collaboration as a moat: value grows with human or agent collaboration

The creator recommends focusing on collaboration as a moat: software where value grows as human collaboration or agent collaboration grows is where there is more value.

Operational excellence is a viable moat as pressure shifts from writing code to operating it

The creator argues operational excellence is a viable moat: pressure will shift from developing code to operating it, so the better your operational and technical excellence, the better chance your SaaS company has to survive.

SparkToro-style investors have no board seat and only limited veto power

What's consistent across SparkToro-style raises is no board of directors and no real investor oversight; investors' only power is veto over future fundraising or a sale that doesn't return their money if unpaid, and Rand has never gotten an unsolicited 'how's it going' check-in.

Alternative funding model: dividends, pro rata ownership, and optional future rounds

Under the SparkToro-style model, making more money requires paying dividends pro rata; founders can instead raise another round to keep investing, and on a sale investors and founders get pro rata ownership after payback.

Operational excellence becomes a moat as AI apps break more often

The creator argues that lacking operational excellence leaves a SaaS vulnerable, because as one-off AI apps break more often, buyers will look for cases where operational excellence is still in place.

Network effects remain a real moat, and SaaS should seek them where collaboration helps

The creator endorses network effects as still real because interconnected systems are valuable, and advises SaaS founders to look for network effects in places where collaboration helps. As network effects increase, the likelihood customers use SaaS increases.

Make promises you can actually deliver on when choosing a funding model

SparkToro succeeded because it made a reasonable promise with high odds of being delivered on, unlike Moz; the speaker wouldn't trade that for any amount of money.

Venture-backed startups must chase growth and raise the next round

Traditional venture-backed startups spend fast chasing growth at all costs, forcing them to raise the next round; without future rounds to raise, growth rate need not be optimized.

Hire team members with different motivation archetypes to offset company needs

If your business is at a place where you can do it, hire team members with different motivation archetypes than your own — if you're a craftsperson, you need to hire a people person; if you're a people person, maybe hire a list maker. Bringing in team members with different motivational profiles offsets what the company needs so you don't have to do all the things yourself.

The economics are shifting: code gets cheaper, good systems and buyer attention get more expensive

The creator argues the economics are changing: the cost of creating code will drop, but the cost of creating good systems will increase, and the cost of appearing in front of buyers at the right moment will also increase. These are factors founders need to think about.

What's the problem?', 'What are the things that get in the way of your motivation?', and 'What are your strategies that have worked in the past that help you get back on track?'

Internet infrastructure areas remain open moat opportunities, especially combined with operational excellence

The creator recommends internet infrastructure areas — hosting, IP address management, and similar — as still 'super open' as moat areas, especially when combined with operational excellence, noting those two moats work well together.

Serving single users with simple tools invites in-house replacement

The creator argues that building a SaaS for non-collaborative, non-regulated, non-infrastructure projects aimed at one person or a very small group will likely result in those users eventually building in-house software instead.
